Weathervanes are a classic weather telling device. In days before the weather channel, these pieces of metal, posted on the top of the barn were exceedingly popular to have around. They would let the folks on the farm know if there was a storm coming their way. It was the only real clue the pioneers had as to what the weather was doing, and when the winds were shifting. In 48 B.C., there were weathervanes built to give the Greeks a clue to what was happening with the winds, one of them as a massive man-sized weathervane that was half man, half fish. Further forward in history, the Vikings also seemed to know a thing or two about weathervanes’ usefulness to tell weather. Theirs regularly had designs of Norse mythological animals and would be put on a ship so sailors could know what was happening in the atmosphere. On land, they were put atop Scandinavian churches.

But often you have likely seen the rooster as an animal on weathervanes. You may think that this is because of the old country influence, but it actually goes back much, much further. Making Weathervanes

Making weathervanes at home can be fun. People can experiment and design their own wind vanes.

A careful study of weathervanes is required before proceeding to make a weather vane. Location, as to where the weather vane will be placed has to be decided before building the weathervane.

The first step would be to gather necessary materials required to build the weather vane. Some of the materials required include cardboard paper or wood, heavy wires, wire coat hanger, scissors, paints, wooden stand or dowel and string. It is simpler to make weathervanes with material like cardboard or wood at beginner's level. A suitable design should be selected, keeping in mind, the material that may be used. Then the design will have to be stenciled on the material used. Thereafter, cardboard or wood needs to be cut carefully according to the shape of the design stenciled, using sharp scissors or saw. Once the shape is cut, it can be painted using different colors or finishes available in the craft stores. Various finishing kits are also available to impart depth and a look of antiquity to the texture of the vane.

The cutout of the wood or cardboard is then attached to the hanger using tapes in case of cardboard or fixed on the wooden dowel or stand in case wood. Old proverbs such as this were the earliest weather forecasts. Passed down from generation to generation, these rhymes helped our ancestors recognize when a storm was brewing or a cold snap was on the way.

Long before Doppler radar, farmers and sailors in Colonial America knew how to predict the weather by reading the wind and watching the skies. Their approach to reading the weather is just as useful in today's world.

Watching the Clouds

This is perhaps the best-known weather proverb, but what does it mean, exactly?

The type and color of clouds in the sky can be an excellent weather predictor. When the sun rises or sets, its light takes on a reddish tint as it is filtered through the atmosphere.

To have a red sky in the morning, the eastern sky needs to be clear of clouds and the western sky must be cloudy. Since the prevailing wind direction in the northern hemisphere is west to east, a red sky at morning means that storm clouds are headed your way.

Likewise, a red sky at night means that the clouds are to the east and clear skies to the west, all of which meant that you can expect a calm night.

Halo around the sun or moon,

Means rain or snow soon

This old rhyme can forecast precipitation within the next 24 hours. There are several different types of clouds, and the appearance of some is a pretty good sign that rain or snow are on their way.

A halo around either the sun or the moon is caused by ice crystal floating inside cirrostratus clouds. The ice crystals refract light, which will cause the halo mentioned in this proverb.

Cirrostratus clouds are very thin, high altitude clouds that give the sky a milky white appearance. If you see cirrostratus clouds, you can indeed expect rain or snow within 24 hours.

"He doesn't know which way the wind is blowing."

This old saying means that a person is a fool who can't see an obvious trend.

Knowing the wind direction was vital to the lives of farmers and anyone working outdoors. That's why every early American farmhouse featured a weathervane. The direction your weathervane pointed could warn a coming storm or tell if it was a good day to work the fields.

Colonial Americans loved weathervanes and adapted them into beautiful, ornate designs, including flying eagles, angels and leaping fish. In part these designs were aesthetic; in part they were functional, since they made the weathervane easier to read from across the fields.

So what does wind direction tell us? This proverb gives an idea.

In the eastern half of the United States the prevailing winds blow from the west. A shift in wind direction toward the east or north means bad news. It could even mean that a dreaded "Nor'easter" was approaching.

If you want one weathervane for decoration in the garden, you have to decide how you will most often look at it. If you have a seating area, you may not want it to be too high in the air or you will have to strain your neck to see it. Meanwhile, if your garden is more of a walking trail, you should probably put the garden weathervane up a little higher so it's not in your face.

If you are building a more functional garden weathervane, you have a little more work ahead of you. You are going to have to figure out how tall it will be and erect a pole and weathervane holder that are that high in the air. The exceptionally picky part of this is making sure that the pole is perfectly level on all sides. If it isn't your garden weathervane will be crooked and will probably not work properly.

Before you move forward with this project you need to make sure you have the right garden weathervane for the job. While in your hand a garden weathervane will look one size, once it's 20 feet in the air or across the garden, it will look very different. Before making a weathervane purchase make sure to stand as far away from it as you would be when looking at it in the garden. Now how does it look? If you still like the look, you're on the right path.

Finally make sure you pick a garden weathervane that goes with the garden. It should be made of a material that complements the other materials you have at work throughout this area. It could also have a design that goes with the general theme of the garden you have created.

In home design, it's not uncommon for functional objects to be reinvented into something decorative or ornamental. One example is the weathervane, a device originally meant to tell the direction of the wind. Once considered a practical tool for anyone working out of doors, weathervane is now as much an art form as it is a weather instrument. If you're looking to add style and value to your home, weathervanes may be just what you need.

History
The word "weathervane" comes from the Old English fane, which means banner or flag. Weathervanes have been in use ever since man learned to tell weather patterns through the wind. The earliest known use was in 48 B.C., when the Greeks placed a life-sized statue of the Greek god Triton on top of the Tower of Winds in Athens.

Around the time the New World was discovered, colonists displayed weathervanes on the highest steeples to symbolize the towns' new identity. At first, they simply used the same old figures as their European ancestors, but eventually they changed the pointer (known in the industry as the "ornament") to better reflect the town's environment. Coastal towns used figures of fish and ships; rural homes were topped with sculpted farm animals. Today, weathervanes remain one of the most popular items for outdoor home décor.

Materials
Copper is easily the most popular material for weathervanes. Its distinctive color and extreme durability make it ideal for long-term outdoor use. Copper may come with a natural or bronze finish, which are equally attractive. Natural copper turns a beautiful dark green or brown over time, while a protective finish maintains the original color. Iron and zinc coatings can also be applied.

For the more practical of us, vinyl offers great value. They are highly weather-resistant and require virtually no maintenance. Vinyl, a plastic-based synthetic material, will stand up to all sorts of weather and last years. It's not as classy as copper, but if you're after function and quality, it definitely does the job.

Wood weathervanes are mostly considered artisan crafts and are too delicate for outdoor use. You'll usually find wood weathervanes adorning shelves, tabletops or mantelpieces. As such, durability is not always a priority, so several types of wood can be used. Among the most common types are cherry, cedar and pine.

Styles
You can also choose from swell-bodied, full-bodied, and silhouette weathervanes. The swell-bodied type is by far the most common, because they have some dimension but are still thin enough to move with the wind. As the name implies, the ornament simply swells a bit in the middle. You can mount it on your rooftop or on a freestanding pole in your garden.

The full-bodied weathervane features a fully three-dimensional sculpture as its pointer. Because of the bulkier size, they are more resistant to wind and weather. However, they also need more support from the base and are harder to balance. They are recommended for rooftops in areas with strong winds and harsh weather.

Silhouette types are cut out from a flat sheet of metal. There is little to no detail, so the figures are usually those with an identifiable profile. Roosters and arrows are the most common examples. Because they don't have much structural integrity, they are best used on mount poles in gardens and gazebos.

Buying Tips
The most important thing when buying a weathervane is its size. Like cupolas, weathervanes have to be proportional in size to your house. As a general rule, ornaments measuring 8 to 15 inches are ideal for pole mounting, 12 to 20 inches will work for cottage, gazebo or small rooftop, and over 20 inches is best for full-size rooftops.

Next on your list should be balance. The unit should be designed so that the weight is equally distributed on both halves. Otherwise, the vane will tip over on the heavier side. Finally, consider your mounting options. Are you installing it on a garden pole or on top of a cupola? If it's the latter, make sure the cupola is weathervane-ready so you don't have to get roof mounts. For pole mounting, the best height is from 5 to 8 feet-high enough to be visible but not too high to allow access.

The most important thing is to make sure it reflects your own personality and style. As long as you know the basics and choose wisely, your weathervane may be one of the best additions to your home or garden.

Unless you actually possess one, a weathervane is something that many of us see most days but don’t necessarily take much notice of. We all go about our business and probably take for granted the weathervanes that are situated all around us; perhaps at work or in our own neighbourhood - possibly even next door.

The weathervane comes in all shapes and sizes and can be found in any manner of places, most commonly upon rooftops. They usually are made of either copper or aluminium and can represent anything from mythical creatures to household animals - for example: gargoyles; angels; dragons, geese, eagles, herons, humming birds, dogs, cows, bears, prancing horses and possibly the most familiar of all - the rooster!

The rooster became an immortalised sculpture upon the tops of domes in all the world of Christendom, when the pope proclaimed that in honour of the apostle Peter, each church should have a rooster on the rooftops as weathervanes, to act as a constant reminder to followers of peace and harmony, like that of times gone by.
