Weathervane - One is a Fabulous Outdoor Decoration

Weathervanes
There are two main kinds of decoration for the home when you're talking about outdoors. There's the type that incorporates the thought system that every item must match every other item used in the decorating scheme and then there is the thinking that the items used should have a meaning to the person setting up the décor scheme using items that invoke specific feelings or meanings. Wouldn't it be great to find an item that could give you the best of both worlds? You can have it in a weathervane.

It's not just for telling you the direction of the wind, a weathervane is also an outstanding decoration value in the garden, on a gazebo or on the rooftop of your home or garage. And you don't have to choose a traditional design either. Granted a running horse or a straight standing rooster looks fabulous and is a callback to days gone by evoking a homey and cozy charm; you may want symbols or something that has a special meaning to you.

For example, a copper sun face weathervane is a glorious way of bringing sunshine to your outdoor décor all year round. The sun is traditionally a symbol of the male and also of brightness, intelligence and goodness. Some cultures consider the symbolism of the sun to be lucky especially when the sun is depicted with a human face. Or, maybe you are into nature and the lovely outdoors, then a fabulous choice for you would be those that have a nature theme. Like, you can get one that is in the shape of a giant black bear, another that looks like a moose, one that is in the shape of a fish, and there are even ones that have the appearance of pine trees and others that look like deer.

Believe it or not, the choices don't end there when it comes to all the weathervane options that are available. For example, if you really have a need for speed, you can get ones that are in shape of motorcycles, dragsters, airplanes, and locomotives. Nautical themed selection are another available choice and if you have a favorite college sports team that you like, that is even available too since there are ones in the shape of college mascots.

Feel like checking out the different weathervane choices? If so, the thing to do is to hit the Internet for some online shopping. While on the World Wide Web, you can breeze through the different stores and their selections. When you do come across something you like, finding it at the best price possible is easy and it will even be sent right to you at your home. So, you don't have to waste time and money by leaving your house. Now that is convenient.

When it comes down to it, if you want a versatile outdoor decoration, simply invest in a wonderful weathervane. It is an outdoor fixture that you cannot go wrong by investing in.

Author Jennifer Akre is an owner of different niche online stores that offer customers not only products, but information relating to furnishing and decorating indoor and outdoor living spaces. Whether you want to redecorate your living room or create the ultimate outdoor environment perfect for entertaining, there is a lot of helpful advice to take advantage of to make it happen. Copper Weathervanes - Take Your Yard Back in Time With One

Weathervanes
Have you always been in love with the days past? Is the idea of living in the movie 'Gone With the Wind' or hopping into an old White House photograph the perfect home and yard? While many people may tell you those days have come and gone, you can take a jump into the traditional past, if you know the right way to decorate your yard.

Copper Weathervanes

Before you even consider the plants you want to use in your backyard, you need to understand the accents you will be choosing.

One thing that often was a descriptor in the past was copper weathervanes. These used to be a major part of predicting weather and what was coming from Mother Nature. Long before there were TV meteorologists and the Weather Channel, people used copper weathervanes, perched on a roof, to see where the wind was coming from and predict what the weather was going to do.

While you may not need weathervanes today to be able to predict the weather, as you can just turn on the TV in the morning, these are still a very important piece of having a yard from the past. So, you should start by deciding how many of these you will have and where you will place them.

When it comes to selecting a location for your copper weathervanes, there are a few options:

• On the Roof - Even if you don't; have a barn for a home or a barn in the backyard, you can still have a weathervane on the roof. You can choose to either put it on the roof of your home or on the roof of a shed or other structure that is in your yard. One unique way to put one up is on top of a bird house, or dog house, that is shaped like a barn.

• In the Yard - Contrary to popular belief, weather vanes are not relegated to a rooftop. Many people like to see them a little closer, and allow them to be the center of attention, by placing them on free-standing posts in the yard. The important thing to keep in mind while doing this is that if you want your copper weathervanes to respond to the wind and weather you need to make sure to place them high enough that they will be able to feel the wind. This usually means 15 feet, or more, off the ground so they can clear the roof of your house.

Once you have the weathervanes in place, you're not done yet. You now need to make sure the rest of your yard looks the part and this means choosing the right plants to have growing. Make sure to accent the yard with traditional plants such as roses and carnations. You can also choose more edible traditional plants such as sunflowers, corn, tomatoes and bean plants if you are looking for a more 'Wizard of Oz' barn house feel.

If you have kids, planting a farm garden is a great project they can get involved in while you teach them a little about the past.

Weathervanes - New Age Lawn Ornaments

WeathervaneTraditional weathervanes have been a part of Western culture for thousands of years and date back all the way to antiquity. Weather vanes originally came to America from Europe and they became very popular for people living in New England. Because this part of the country depended heavily upon the sea for its livelihood and survival, many antique windvanes featured fish or other maritime themes. As the nation grew and advanced westward, other themes became popular on weather vanes, including: horses, roosters, and other farming related topics.

Finials like the weathervane were not mere aesthetic adornments for the rooftop or cupola—they used to be very necessary for survival! Before the invention of the Weather Channel, people had to rely on their copper weathervane (most antique windvanes are made from copper as it was a very common and popular material) to warn them of advancing storms or other potential dangers to their livelihood and family. But, as communication and technology advanced, the practical necessity for the weathervane faded along with its overall popularity and use.

Today, however, there has been a dramatic resurgence in traditional weathervanes but not necessarily in the classic sense. In the past, people would climb to the roof in order to mount a weather vane as it was the most practical place to determine wind direction. Today, however, people are deciding instead to use their beautiful weathervanes in less traditional roles and many are opting to use them as lawn ornaments. Weathervane

Made in a far greater variety of styles, sizes, and designs, the modern weathervane is at home in just about any lawn or garden. Far from the typical gnomes and other landscaping accoutrements, ornate weathervanes help your home stand out from the crowd and may very well make you the envy of friends and family alike.

If you are interested in adding a traditional windvane to your landscape, try getting online and shopping around for the best prices and greatest selection. Online merchants, because of their low overhead, can offer contemporary and classic weathervanes in a greater array of choices and at more competitive prices than most traditional retailers.

Just be sure to decide upon the material beforehand as it can play a large role in pricing. Timeless weathervanes are offered in a wide variety of materials, including: aluminum, copper, or even brass. The best material for you will depend upon the exterior of your home and your particular taste.

Copper Weathervanes - They Can Predict Spring Showers

Copper Weathervane
For centuries, societies have depended upon the weather for their livelihoods as well as for their recreational activities. Before technology advanced meteorological predictions, through the use of satellites, people relied upon copper weathervanes placed on the highest building in town. And even despite today's weather forecasting abilities, many people still use weathervanes to both predict the nearby weather and as decorative accents to their homes and gardens.

Modern use of weathervanes is often seen as incorporating an accessory into one's home or garden. The beauty of copper weathervanes seems to have replaced the functional uses. However, many gardeners will install a copper weathervane to help them gauge when the oh-so-needed spring showers will occur. By keeping a watchful eye, gardeners can plan their garden's watering needs through the useful wind patterns revealed by their weathervanes.

The weathervane will point into the direction from which the wind is coming. Traditional advice instructs gardeners to watch for wind from the south, as this will lead to rain. During springtime, weathervanes can predict a spring shower when the wind is from the north as well.

Copper is the most popular material for weathervanes because the substance can be easily manipulated into the various shapes and types of copper weathervanes that are available. Additionally, copper can easily handle the elements without harming its appearance or taking away from its attractiveness. A brand new copper weathervane has a bright copper color and a shiny finish. As the weathervane becomes exposed to the natural conditions, the color of it changes. Depending on where the weathervane is geographically located, a green hue will develop on the surface over the course of several years. The aged copper weathervane's look can be manipulated sooner, rather than waiting for those years, but many gardening and homeowner purists will allow the process to occur as naturally as the spring shower predictions. Besides, copper weathervanes will appreciate in value as they age.

Some enthusiasts of the copper weathervane will dedicate a large portion of their time to extensive antique hunting and scouring of yard and estate sales. Quite often these antique ones are sold through online auctions, although one may luck out and find one the old fashioned way! Antique copper weathervanes can be extremely expensive. One reason is the unique and breathtaking display of color that has developed on its surface over time. Another reason could be its age-old superiority to predicting the weather. Quite possibly, many people hunt for old ones to experience the magic of predicting spring showers.

Societies that functioned without the technology that we lean on today relied upon the consistent use of weathervanes to predict their livelihoods. One such prediction that was extremely important was that of spring showers. Spring showers meant the gardens and crops could get a good start to the growing season.

Today, although there are people who primarily use weathervanes as decorative additions to their homes or gardens, they are still reliable when predicting spring showers.

Wooden Weather Vanes

Wooden Weathervane
Weather vanes, also known as wind vanes are used to detect the direction of the wind. Weather vanes are usually attached to an elevated object, mostly rooftops to indicate the course of the wind. The weather vane has evolved as a beautiful collectible and unusual piece of folk art. It is often found in the shape of cockerels, popularly known as weathercocks. However, other shapes such as arrows, pigs, angels, cows and multiple other designs can now be found in the form of weather vanes. They are made of different materials such as copper, brass, sheets of metal and wood.

Wooden vanes are part of the traditional architecture of weather vanes. Shapes of different animals, birds or statues are carved out on the wood to define the form of vanes. Weight and measurement of the wooden weather vane depend on their shape and size. Wooden skillets are used to mount the finished piece at the rooftop. Apart from placing them on rooftops they can also be placed on other places in the house, such as kitchen plate stands or fireplace mantels for display purposes.

Weather vanes can be made at home if required. The shape and form of the weather vane may be selected after studying sample weathervanes. Then an outline of the design chosen may be stenciled on the piece of wood. Thereafter the wood is cut out according to the shape stenciled on it. Rough edges and splinters may be smoothened out by sand papering them. A coat of varnish and polish will preserve their natural wood color. Different paint finishes with vibrant color schemes may be used according to personal choice.

Several craft stores stock readymade wooden kits in imaginative shapes and sizes. These may be assembled according to instructions provided to lend varied looks and appearances. Color kits are also available to embellish the appearance of weather vanes. Once the vane is ready, it just needs to be attached to a wooden dowel and fitted to the preferred position.

Antique collection of wooden weather vanes can be found online and local craft stores. However, buyers are advised to check and compare the rates before buying. Rates may vary according to the material, size, condition and vintage of antique weather vanes.

Most wholesale shopping sites display market price next to the dealer price, in order to highlight the difference in pricing. Customers are tempted to take advantage of discounted prices. Brass Weather Vanes

Weathervanes have surpassed their purpose of indicating direction of wind. Apart from their functional purpose, they are increasingly used as an object to decorate the house. Brass weathervanes present an antique and rustic look due to their dull polished exteriors. They succeed in adding to the ethnic look of the house and are in great demand as a collectible. They acquire a unique look when accentuated with other metals.

Brass has been traditionally used for building weather vanes. Several designs, shapes and forms can be built using brass. Brass weathervanes are usually built from sheets of metal and hammered into the desired shape or form. Special care is taken to give a full body appearance by additional built-in brass that adds volume.

Apart from being mounted on roofs, they are also used as a decorative piece in gardens, kitchen stands, and on fences or fireplace mantles. Brass weather vanes can be simple or ornamental depending on the design and place of its display or utility value. Decorative weathervanes can be installed on rooftops for ornamental purposes. They add to the décor of the room and provide a touch of class to interior furnishings of the house. Some common shapes used to manufacture brass weather vanes are cocks, cows, pigs, arrows, birds and even bugs and insects. Displaying them according to the shape and purpose gives them a look of whimsical fancy and décor. Weathervanes - The Timeless Aura

Weathervane
When you really stop to think about it, people can decorate their homes with some of the strangest creations known to Man. Remember when those fancy globes were all the rage and everyone had to have at least one adorning their yard? People will place fake deer, roosters, and just about any barnyard critter out on their lawn for the world to see. One particular phase that has seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years is the appearance of a quality-made weathervane mounted to the rooftops of homes all throughout the land.

Now at one time, when the nation was still primarily rural and most people made their living from farming or some form of agriculture, weathervanes were more popular than garden gnomes are today. However, unlike those spooky gnomes that inhabit yards across this country, there was a very pragmatic and necessary reason to mount a weathervane to the top of your home.

The weather is the life force of agriculture and it was positively vital for farmers to know if storms were approaching. It was very common for brass or copper finials to have barometers and other useful instruments for predicting weather attached to them. Of course the primary purpose of weathervanes is to indicate the direction of wind—another useful piece of information for a farmer to possess as it would help predict the approach of coming storms.

Of course in this modern age of 24-hour weather channels, the Internet, and a number of various tools for predicting weather, the practical necessity for the weathervane vanished and so too did its popularity. However, there indeed has occurred a very real rise in the popularity of weathervanes but they are used solely for aesthetic purposes on homes nowadays.

In many ways, the premium weathervane is a real piece of Americana and a part of the fabric which is our nation. While the original antique weathervanes were hand-crafted and have become collector's items, the newer versions are made in a wider range of shapes and sizes. These new shapes and designs have indeed helped with the resurging popularity of weathervanes, but many people still like to buy the more traditional weathervanes made in the shape of farm animals like the rooster—a classic style.

But whether you are shopping for a quality antique weathervane to place atop your traditional home or perhaps a custom windvane to give your home an added touch of style, online shopping offers the best opportunity to find the greatest selection and lowest prices.

Weathervanes—why Limit Yourself To The Roof?

weathervane

Classic weathervanes are the perfect complement to any roof line and make the perfect finial for a cupola. Shortly after World War I, traditional weathervanes began to lose popularity as rural America began its final push into the cities. Plus, with the invention of the radio, the need to predict the weather in rural farming communities became less of a necessity. By the 1960's, it seemed as though weathervanes would become another piece of American folk culture and little more than an attraction at cultural museums.

But, as though harkening back to some simpler time, the popularity of the windvane began to surge again in recent years and suddenly they started appearing on rooftops and cupolas all over the nation. Adding to the resurgent popularity of the weather vane is a group of collectors who scour the country for antique copper vanes and restore them. There is even a large following on Ebay that regularly buy and sell these classic pieces of Americana regularly and even clubs that gather every year to talk about and share the most recent discoveries.

Basically, the popularity of stylish and classic weathervanes has returned and people are buying them in all shapes and sizes to place atop their rooftops. The classic weathervanes typically featured agriculture themes, such as: roosters, cows, and horses. New England homeowners typically had themes relating to the sea, such as fish. Contemporary vanes feature both the classic themes and a wide assortment of popular icons and ideas relevant to today's society.

However, because many live in apartment communities or rental houses, the prospect of adding a weathervane to the roof top may simply be impractical or a violation of the lease agreement. Also, many elderly love the idea of having a traditional weathervane atop their home but don't want to risk injury by climbing up a ladder and mounting one to the roof. In any of the cases above, one very viable alternative is to mount the weather vane in a garden.

Like any lawn adornment, classic weathervanes add a touch of personality to one's landscaping. Also, it is just sometimes fun to watch them as a storm is approaching or simply to admire them from a garden bench. The idea is that you don't need to limit yourself to the rooftop when it comes to mounting a weathervane. You can even use a vane to help decorate a barn or garage. Therefore, if you love traditional weathervanes but cannot for some reason mount one to the top of your home, use your imagination and place them wherever you wish!

Weathervanes - The Primitive Weather Channel

World's largest weathervane
Weathervanes are a classic weather telling device. In days before the weather channel, these pieces of metal, posted on the top of the barn were exceedingly popular to have around. They would let the folks on the farm know if there was a storm coming their way. It was the only real clue the pioneers had as to what the weather was doing, and when the winds were shifting. They would use that information to make their own predictions on what kinds of weather may be coming their way.

But weathervanes go back far before the pioneer days and the Wizard of Oz, they go back to the times of Ancient Greece. In 48 B.C., there were weathervanes built to give the Greeks a clue to what was happening with the winds, one of them as a massive man-sized weathervane that was half man, half fish. They hoped to have some idea of the power of the winds, through their weathervanes.

Further forward in history, the Vikings also seemed to know a thing or two about weathervanes’ usefulness to tell weather. Theirs regularly had designs of Norse mythological animals and would be put on a ship so sailors could know what was happening in the atmosphere. On land, they were put atop Scandinavian churches.

But often you have likely seen the rooster as an animal on weathervanes. You may think that this is because of the old country influence, but it actually goes back much, much further. These rooster weathervanes became popular in the ninth century when the Pope wanted a religious reminder to adorn the top of the church. His selection was pulled from the bible, Luke 22:34, stating the morning after the last supper the cock would not crow until Peter denounced Jesus three times. Because of this verse, there are rooster weathervanes adorning chapels and abbey’s throughout Europe and beyond.

When it comes to the translation of the words weathervanes, you may actually picture something a little different. It is believed the word vane comes from the original ‘fane’ meaning flag in Anglo-Saxon. This would make sense, as through medieval times there were many flags and banners posted above buildings that would essentially serve the purpose of a weather vane. At some point, either because they grew tired of the wearing out of the cloth, or the cost to replace it, they moved to metal flags, some with coats of arms or other insignia, that were on posts where they could still shift and move with the wind.

Still today weather vanes are popular. While we may have better technology when it comes to predicting the weather, like Doppler radar instead of weathervanes, many still like the tradition of the pieces, and the antique look they bring to their home.

In many rural areas you can still find weathervanes in many designs from flags to ships, dogs, horses, and the famous rooster adorning homes and barns. While they may no longer need to be your only source for weather information, they are a great way to appreciate a blast of wind as they did in the past.

Copper Weathervanes - How They Were Created

Weathervane

When was the last time you saw copper weathervanes and wondered about those pieces of farmhouse architecture?

If you're like most people, you probably haven't put any thought into the history and creation of that spinning piece of metal you saw on a farmhouse or in a garden.

If you've thought of putting copper weathervanes on your home or in your yard, wouldn't you like to at least know about these pieces so you can appreciate them more?

Copper weathervanes have been around for a centuries. Originally, they were a very important element of the farmhouse life. Copper weather vanes were attached to the top of the barn as a way to let farmers know what was happening with the weather. Back in the time when copper weathervanes were first in use, there were no weather forecasters and meteorologists to let the farmers know what was coming and what to expect for their fields.

While the primitive copper weathervanes were just pieces of metal that were put in place on the roof that would turn with the changing winds, they evolved over time.

Why put up plain, flat pieces of metal when you can have attractive decorative copper weathervanes? That is exactly what was created to replace those boring pieces of metal. It soon became just as important to have beautifully decorated copper weathervanes as it was to have functional ones. Since these pieces stand out and are often the first image someone has of a home, as they stick up above the tree line, they became a weather device that also was to be an artistic beacon to the farm.

If you are wondering why copper weathervanes are the most popular, there are a few reasons. First, copper is a very easy to work with material that can be formed into various shapes without too much difficulty. Additionally, it is an attractive metal. Also, it is important to note that copper weathervanes are best suited for all kinds of weather. While some metals will rust, copper will stand up well to the elements and may patina over time, but that appearance is one that is admired in copper, while rust is not so appreciated in other metals.

If you are considering putting copper weathervanes on your barn or just in your garden, it is important to know how to properly set them up.

If you want the copper weathervanes to work properly as well as look pretty, they must be able to tell what is happening with the weather. That means they need to be above the tree line, so they will be able to react to the shift in winds. Many mount copper weathervanes on the top of tall steel rods to offer a strong support for the structure.

Adding copper weathervanes to your home or yard are a great way to capture a little bit of the old world in the modern day.

Start with lighter pieces of wood and come up with a design you want to have yours to have. You need to transfer the designs to the piece of wood and then cut them out.

Now it's time to pull out some sandpaper and smooth down all the edges and portions of the weathervanes to make them look smooth.

You can paint or decorate at this point, or just leave the it in natural wood colors. If you are looking for more of a natural appearance, you may want to stain them, to give a little brighter look, plus a little protection from the elements. A layer of varnish won't hurt either.

If you aren't sure you can create the right balance in the base of the weathervanes, you can purchase a kit that will make things easier for you. Many craft stores have ready to go weathervanes kits that will allow you to create your own special weathervanes for the top of the setup.

Once you create your own weathervanes you have a few choices in how you want to put them to work. Many people use weathervanes in the house to decorate a country themed room or to enhance their décor. Others put the weathervanes where they should be, outside. They may be put in the garden, as a decoration around the plants. Or, if you want to go the traditional route, you can find instillation kits for them and attach them to the top of your garage, or a barn, if you have one.

Whether it's inside or outside, weathervanes can add a little bit of country to your home décor. Making your own weathervanes takes things to the next level of personalization.

Weathervanes - A Little Piece of History for Your Home

Weathervanes

When it comes to modern folk art that has an Americana feel, you're likely to see weathervanes. Bringing images to mind of the rooftops of farms in the American Midwest, they are a very popular décor item for those who are decorating with an American folk art décor.
Interestingly enough, weathervanes are not from the American Midwest, they have a much older history. They have been found as far back in time as 48 B.C., in Greece, so they are definitely not uniquely American.

When the colonists originally came to the new world, they brought with them the weathervanes that would let them show off a little bit from the rooftops. As Americans moved west, their these lovely accessories went with them. This is where the pictures that come to our minds came from. They would set up ranches on the prairies along the way and from each barn rooftop would be that old familiar symbol, as these fixtures swayed in the breeze.

While many people think weathervanes were an accurate representation of what the wind was doing, that is not always the case. As the decorative aspects of these accessories became more important and people were constantly trying to make a more showy art piece of a weather vane, they were not all created with the right balance. In order for them to be effective as a wind measure, they have to be perfectly balanced so when the wind blows it can easily move the weathervanes and show the wind impact. Additionally they had to be created with an uneven momentum so once the wind would blow they would not just spin, but instead point into the wind, letting those on the ground get a clear image of the wind direction. Some of the balanced perfection went by the wayside as the creators tried to make more beautiful and ornate pieces. While they would still generally do their job, the perfect balance was not always the priority, so they may not have been as accurate as many would have hoped.

These days whether or not weathervanes are pointing perfectly is not as important, since often they are attached to electronic equipment that is really doing the work. The modern ones are often just there for good looks and a touch of nostalgia, while the more modern equipment does the real work.

Some things do still hold true in the workings of weathervanes. They have to be far off the ground. Even in the middle of a pasture trees off to the side of the property can have a negative effect on the wind they end up experiencing. Instead, they need to be far over tree level, so there is no interference with the wind for readings.

While the traditional weathervanes are no longer needed to measure the weather patterns, they have become a very popular part of culture. Many still put them on their homes for the 'country look' and some artists have immortalized them in paintings and other pieces of art.

Making Weathervanes

Weathervane
Making weathervanes at home can be fun. People can experiment and design their own wind vanes.

A careful study of weathervanes is required before proceeding to make a weather vane. Location, as to where the weather vane will be placed has to be decided before building the weathervane.

The first step would be to gather necessary materials required to build the weather vane. Some of the materials required include cardboard paper or wood, heavy wires, wire coat hanger, scissors, paints, wooden stand or dowel and string. It is simpler to make weathervanes with material like cardboard or wood at beginner's level. A suitable design should be selected, keeping in mind, the material that may be used. Then the design will have to be stenciled on the material used. Thereafter, cardboard or wood needs to be cut carefully according to the shape of the design stenciled, using sharp scissors or saw. Once the shape is cut, it can be painted using different colors or finishes available in the craft stores. Various finishing kits are also available to impart depth and a look of antiquity to the texture of the vane.

The cutout of the wood or cardboard is then attached to the hanger using tapes in case of cardboard or fixed on the wooden dowel or stand in case wood. However, before fixing the weathervane all decoration needs to be completed. Holes are drilled on two sides of the dowel so that it forms a triangle for correct balancing of the wind vane. The weathervane is required to be evenly leveled for proper balance and help detect the direction of wind correctly. After fixing the vane, it should be ensured that it is indicating the direction of the wind properly.

Weathervanes built from metals need to be built by using separate techniques and expertise which may not be easy for a layman to acquire. Skilled coppersmiths are particularly trained in building such objects and thus known for their craftsman ship.

ARROW AND SCROLL WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These ornaments are a basic arrow ornament, a point and fletching attached to a horizontal tube. Sometimes the term "arrow" and the term "scroll" are interchangeable. This depends on the type of fletching, whether there is a point on it and what type of point it is, how intricate the details are, and whether the design contains any actual wrought scrolls.

BANNER AND BANNERET WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These ornaments are derived from medieval pennants and flags, the basic parts of this particular ornament are the points in front and a flat area in the back. Though the terms "banner" and "banneret" also seem to be interchangeable, a banner usually has an area large enough for a date or monogram to be pierced (cut out) or applied to the ornament, while a banneret has an area which might be large but is mainly decorative.

SILHOUETTE WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- This style ornament has also been in use for many, many years. In Europe, businesses and guilds would display their specialty using this type of vane ornament. In the old and new worlds, many farmers would carve a simple figure into a piece of wood and use this as a wind indicator on their barns. After 1900, the silhouette weathervane became very popular again, and often displayed fables, sporting events or themes.

SWELL-BODIED WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- This is the weathervane ornament which is most closely associated with the American weather vane makers. Molds are created from hammered copper for these ornaments. The molds are then trimmed and soldered together into a hollow form which is a few inches thick. This type of vane can also be formed freehand.

FULL-BODIED WEATHERVANE ORNAMENTS- These weathervane ornaments are a 3-dimensional representation of a particular subject.
